Venice 101

A unique orientation created for a unique, water city that will get you on your Venetian feet as soon as possible: complete, concise, and personal, it’s designed to help you get the most out of whatever time you have here.

barca postaVenice is not just any city. The streets are water, there’s not a right angle to be found, finding decent eateries are potluck, and the system of convoluted alleyways can be difficult to navigate even for a local. That’s why having a personal, practical, on-site introduction can make all the difference in how enjoyable the rest of your stay can be.

VENICE 101 is the on-arrival meet, greet, and orientation that will enrich the entire rest of your stay.

It begins with an e-mail containing detailed arrival instructions according to your lodging and your means: air, train, or car. We’ll track your actual arrival and arrange to meet you shortly thereafter. Instead of wandering about, though, we’ll choose the perfect spot in your specific neighborhood (likely a nearby cafe) to sit, chat, and orient you to the city.

We’ll dot your map with locations for any activities you already have scheduled, make suggestions for things to keep an eye out for as you wander. We’ll have eating tips of all types, and make reservations if you’d like (definitely for your first night). We’ll include a complete explanation of the vaporetto and traghetto and how best to take advantage of them. We’ll tell you of any last minute goings-on, answer any specific questions, and include insider recommendations – all according to you personal interests and mode of travel.

MEETING INCLUDES:

  • a highlighted city map
  • transport system explanation and orientation, including nearest vaporetto stops
  • vaporetto explanation with exclusive Venice Vap Map & cheat sheet
  • the current Venice guide and calendar from the TI, with hours, openings, and current events
  • dinner recommendations and reservations (we’ll escort you there if the timing works out)
  • suggestions for how best to organize your time according to your interests and itinerary
  • a printed outline and/or pdf so you don’t forget any of it

We also point out convenient vaporetto & traghetto locations, coordinated city-wide explanations between maps and principal thoroughfares, shortcuts, navigation tips along orientation keys and landmarks, ways to get un-lost, along with shopping tips, current exhibitions, notable wine bars, eateries, favorite gelato bars, and more.

1.5 hour meeting ALSO INCLUDES:

  • detailed arrival advice and instructions
  • arrival tracking
  • maps and other materials
  • vaporetto and city orientation
  • expert eating recommendations from pizza to alta cucina
  • printed version of all info for you to keep

COST:
1-6 adults:       €110

Additional time available at €25 per half-hour (1 – 6 pp).

NOTE: Kids don’t count when calculating number of people.

Venice is a must-see star in Italy’s panoply of attractions; whether you’ve been there many times (like me), or never before (like my brother), this on-site intro to the city, our host’s knowledge of its more hidden delights, and ability to point us in the right direction for our individual interests (and we had a bunch) added so much the rest of our (too-short) stay.

We had not previously used an Intro Service, so were a little uncertain. But happily, we can heartily vouch for the Welcome Intro. It was all so quick and easy to organise, the guidance from airport to hotel made getting into town a breeze, followed by the Intro which really does deliver the goods.

Our group of 3 held diverse interests, and with only 3 days, every minute was precious. But this intro was the best bang for buck (and time spent) for orientation and detailed recommendations (and follow-up) to assist our short stay in Venice. We have recommended it to family & friends, and have no hesitation in doing so to the broader public. Well worth it, no doubt about it.

Nan is a trusted resource with services that will never let you down. She’s so much fun and has a fantastic spirit. I’ve contacted Nan to help me on two different trips to Italy. The 2nd visit to Venice, my friend was seeing it for the first time and I wanted to make sure she got the Venice WOW treatment. Nan arranged for her favorite water taxi driver to meet us at the train station and drop us off at our hotel’s door step! There’s nothing more exciting when seeing Venice for the first time than to arrive this way. She also set us up with a favorite gondelier who met us at the restaurant where we were having dinner and took us through the loveliest canals away from the ‘Gondola Tourist Train’ – you’ll know what I mean when you see it.

She has the best recs for food, wine, guides — I still have a napkin where I asked Nan to write down her favorite meal in Burano. The Vap strike kept us from enjoying it but I’ve saved it for our next visit to Venice.

And…Someone gave me ger book “Italy: Instructions for Use” as a stocking stuffer for Christmas one year — a great little guide to tuck in your pocket. Whenever a friend tells me they’re going to Italy, I go to Amazon.com and send them a copy.

    Buon viaggio!

This was not our first visit to Venice but we still contacted Nan to give us an overview “orientation” especially concentrating on the area where our apartment was. She met us the first afternoon we were there and pointed out attractions, showing us routes through Venice to various places like grocery stores, shops, etc.

Most helpful were her many restaurant suggestions. They were for small neighborhood places that we might never have found on our own. We went to many of these restaurants and bars she suggested and never had a bad meal. That alone was worth the price of Venice 101.

It was also great to be able to call on Nan when we had a question or even if we were totally lost. Your Friend in Venice is a great resource for the independent traveler who still wishes to have a local person to call on.

Thanks, Nan. We had a much richer month’s experience in Venice because of you.
